Dental Crowns

WHEN DO I NEED A CROWN?
Some large fillings can break, chip or are too large to sustain the chewing forces. Thus, for longer longevity of the tooth, a crown is recommended. The crown will cover the entire tooth and will provided added strength

DOES A TOOTH WITH A CROWN NEED TO HAVE A ROOT CANAL?
No, you don’t necessarily need a root canal if a crown is done. However, when a root canal is done, the tooth needs a crown. This is because a tooth is more prone to fracture after it has had a root canal. Thus, to prevent fracture, we recommend a crown to prevent breakage, provide added strength and provide a good seal.

IS A CROWN FOREVER?
Like anything in life, nothing lasts forever, but the more you can do to maintain your crown, the longer it will last. Home oral care is important as well as continuing with regular checkups and cleanings to ensure that you increase the life of your crown.

IF THE TOOTH IS NOT BOTHERING ME, DO I NEED A CROWN?
On your checkups, if we see a large fillings or cracks, we will recommend a crown. The tooth maybe asymptomatic. However, a crown will be still recommended as a preventative measure. At times teeth can crack or break in ways that we can’t restore them. So as always prevention is the best course of action

WHAT KIND OF CROWNS ARE THERE?
We restore teeth with either a Porcelain fused to metal crowns or a metal free, all porcelain Zirconia or E-max crowns. Each are decided depending on an individual basis and needs.
